Stress Management

Tai Chi and Feldenkrais® classes form the basis of the stress management and relaxation services offered in affiliation with CAMSF.

Tai Chi Ch’uan

Tai Chi is the ancient Chinese art of movement meditation, dating back 1,000 years to the Shao-lin Monastery. It has been taught for centuries as a healing art, used for rehabilitation and gentle exercise in hospitals and health centers. Tai Chi helps develop a high degree of concentration and induce a state of relaxation. The rhythmic harmony and gracefulness of the movements are timed to natural breathing, and promote strengthening in the lower body. Regular practice of Tai Chi enhances joint range-of-motion and has been shown to aid cardiovascular functioning by lowering blood pressure and heart rate, resulting in stress reduction.

Feldenkrais® Awareness Through Movement

The Feldenkrais® method is a neuromuscular re-education technique which heightens an individual’s awareness of movement and posture using focused breathing and gentle floor exercises. Individuals learn to release harmful holding patterns in the musculature while improving the function of the back, chest and pelvis. Patients feel refreshed and calm, often learning to let go of awkward and painful movement. These classes induce a state of relaxation, and are suitable for patients at every level.
