A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse with an advanced degree in nursing; usually a Masters Degree. A NP is able to perform a variety of medical functions that enhance or compliment the physician. These functions include medically diagnosing and treating a variety of illnesses. NP’s can prescribe medication necessary for your health. NP’s can provide a wealth of additional benefits including patient counseling and education.

NP functions for Cardiology Associates

Patients are ideally seen by their physician. When an urgent or non-urgent return visit is required then a NP provides a bridge to the physician to allow a patient to return quickly to be medically re-evaluated when a new medicine has been started or adjustments to a current medicine are made.

Urgent visits or “add on” visits can be done in many ways. Our practice is designed to have you be seen by a physician if possible. When it is not possible to be seen by a physician, then a NP can see you for your urgent or emergent medical needs. The NP can make decisions about your healthcare and when necessary, collaborate with the physician.

Many patients call their physician with various needs including clarification of medications, test results and help with medical issues. The CAMSF Doctors try to call their patients when their schedules allow but do rely on the NP to assist with their patients by calling back to help with their needs. Many times the NP will review laboratory or test result and may discuss them with you. This is also done under the supervision of the Physician.

NP’s serve as an adjunct to the Physician by providing coverage in the testing center or with their regularly scheduled visits when an emergency arises at the hospital and requires the Physician to be called away. The NP can step in and see their patients to allow a smooth continuum of care that does not require the patient to reschedule a long awaited appointment.
