Meet Our Physicians
James R. Adams,
MD, FACC

Dr. Adams is originally from San Diego, California. He attended Cornell University and the UCLA School of Medicine while completing his residency at the UCSF Medical Center. Dr. Adams is married with three children. He specializes in Cardiology, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Internal Medicine.

Robert T. Sperling, MD, FACC

Dr. Sperling grew up in Marin County and graduated from Stanford University. He attended medical school at Duke University, was a resident in Internal Medicine at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, MA, and completed fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA. Dr. Sperling is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology and is trained in peripheral vascular medicine and peripheral intervention.
Joel Sklar, MD, FACC
Dr. Sklar was born in Brooklyn, educated at Williams College and UC San Diego, then did his Internal Medicine and Cardiology training at UCSD and the University of Colorado. He has been in practice in Marin County since 1982, and is currently Chief of Cardiology and Medical Director of the Marin Heart Institute at Marin General Hospital. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCSF Medical Center, with more than 35 publications relating to cardiac imaging and cardiac rehabilitation. Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Critical Care Medicine and Interventional Cardiology, he has been named numerous times to "best cardiologists" lists in San Francisco Magazine, Bay Area Consumer Checkbook and Best Doctors in America. He is particularly interested in the treatment and prevention of coronary artery disease, including angioplasty and coronary stenting, noninvasive testing and clinical research. He is committed to patient centered care, balancing the best of high-tech procedural medicine with the basic concepts of wellness and prevention.

Laura Pak, MD, FACC
Dr. Laura Pak was born in Washington D.C. grew up in Dallas, Texas. She is a graduate of Harvard University magna cum laude with a major in English literature. Dr. Pak attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania and was a post-graduate research fellow at the Texas Heart Institute. She completed her General Surgical residency, Interventional Radiology and Vascular Surgery fellowships at UCSF. Prior to joining Cardiology Associates she was an Assistant Professor of Surgery, Division of Vascular Surgery at UCSF. Dr. Pak is currently the Director of Peripheral Vascular Program Development at Marin General Hospital.

Kent N. Gershengorn, MD, FACC
Dr. Gershengorn was born in New York City and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University before attending the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine. He trained in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York before completing a fellowship in clinical cardiology at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, where he currently is Clinical Professor of Medicine. He was recently selected (along with seven other cardiologists in Northern California) as one of "America's Top Doctors".

Ann K. Kao, MD, FACC
Dr. Kao received her undergraduate education at the University of California Los Angeles, and attended medical school at the New York University School of Medicine. Her Internal Medicine residency was completed at the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania and she received advanced fellowship training in Cardiology at the University of California San Francisco. Dr. Kao joined Cardiology Associates of Marin and San Francisco and the Attending Physician Staff of Marin General Hospital in 1991. She is an active member of a number of professional organizations and has served on the Board of Directors of the Marin Medical Society. Dr. Kao is an author on a number of scientific publications.

Steven Hao, M.D., FACC
Medical Director Electrophysiology Laboratory
Dr. Steven Hao graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1992 and received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1996. He completed his Internship and Residency at the New York Presbyterian Hospital, and two fellowships in Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York. Dr. Hao is board certified in Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology. Dr. Hao is the principal investigator for several multi-center trials in electrophysiology, has lectured both nationally and internationally on many areas of electrophysiology including catheter ablation for arterial atrial fibrillation

David C. Sperling, MD, FACC
Dr. Sperling was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and attended Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. He completed residency at Cleveland Metro General Hospital. Dr. Sperling has been a Clinical Instructor at UCSF and is married with two children.

Brian Keeffe, MD
Dr. Keeffe is originally from Portland, Oregon. He is a cum laude graduate of Georgetown University in Washington DC with majors in English and economics. Dr. Keeffe also attended medical school at Georgetown, where he graduated with honors. He then trained in internal medicine at Stanford University, followed by cardiovascular disease training at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Dr. Aquino, MD
Dr. Aquino was born and raised in South Bend Indiana. She received a degree in international politics from Georgetown University, then attended Indiana University for medical school. She completed her general surgery residency at Boston Medical Center. She subsequently stayed at Boston Medical Center for her vascular fellowship, and then completed an endovascular fellowship at Norfolk General Hospital in Virginia. Her clinical interests include the endovascular and open treatment of peripheral vascular disease, carotid disease, and abdominal aneurysms, as well as new treatments for varicose veins.

Brian L. Strunk, MD, FACC
Brian Strunk, born in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, received his Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Princeton University and his medical degree from Harvard University. After his medical residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, he completed his cardiology fellowship at Stanford University. He is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease as well as Interventional Cardiology. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Interventional Cardiology and has published several articles on interventional cardiology. He is an Associate Clinical Professor at UCSF and co-chair of the cardiology division at MGH.

Richard Hongo, M.D., FACC
Cardiac Electrophysiologist
Dr. Richard Hongo received his M.D. in 1995 from Loma Linda University School of Medicine. He completed his Internship and Residency at Legacy Emanuel/Good Samaritan Hospitals in Portland, and Cardiology at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. His Electrophysiology training was completed at the University of California, San Francisco in 2003. Dr. Hongo is board certified in Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology. Dr. Hongo's expertise covers the full range of current technology and skill in cardiac arrhythmias management, including specialized pacemakers for resynchronizing the weakened heart, implantable defibrillators, and catheter ablation for heart rhythm problems.

Margaret L. Baer, MD, FACC
Dr. Baer received an MS in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University and attended Harvard Medical School. She completed her residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. Prior to joining CAMSF, Dr. Baer had a private practice with Stanislaus Cardiology in Modesto, CA.

Jerald A. Young, MD, FACC

Dr. Young is originally from Detroit, Michigan, and attended the University of Michigan School of Medicine. He is currently Co-Director of the Nuclear Cardiology Laboratory at Marin General Hospital.

Mark P. Wexman, MD, FACC

Dr. Wexman was born in Queens, New York, and attended New York University Medical School. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSF and is married with two children.
Soon J. Park, MD, MS
Dr. Park received his MS in Biochemistry from the University of Chicago and his MD at the Pritzker School of Medicine. He was a Cardiothoracic Surgical Resident and Chief Resident at the University of Minnesota. Recent positions include Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at Marin General Hospital.
