TAM Program
Details

The TAM Program is held at Cardiology Associates of Marin and San Francisco's practice in Larkspur, CA. TAM runs for eight and a half-weeks, and is offered five times per year in a small group setting limited to 12 participants.

The TAM Program is a comprehensive, scientifically-based therapeutic approach to managing or preventing atherosclerosis. Participants meet in their TAM group for an immersion weekend, followed by sessions held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings over a period of 8 weeks.

There are five primary components of TAM, taught in individual and small group format. These include:

  • Exercise
  • Nutrition and Diet modification
  • Stress Management: Tai Chi, Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement, Mindfulness Meditation, Relaxation and Breathing Techniques
  • Group Support
  • Education

Exercise
TAM participants are given a comprehensive fitness evaluation before and after the program, with an individualized fitness plan and goal created for each participant.

Nutrition
TAM dietary modifications include:

  • A low-fat heart healthy diet individualized to each person
  • Individualized dietary consultation and computerized diet analysis
  • Consultation regarding eating behavior
  • Catered and pot-luck dinners for the duration of the program

Stress Management
Stress and our bodies reaction to it is a known risk factor contributing to heart disease. Components of the TAM Program's stress management approach include: Meditation, Tai Chi, Feldenkrais and guided imagery.

Tai Chi Ch'uan
Tai Chi is the ancient Chinese art of movement meditation, dating back 1,000 years to the Shao-lin Monastery. It has been taught for centuries as a healing art, used for rehabilitation and gentle exercise in hospitals and health centers. Tai Chi helps develop a high degree of concentration and induce a state of relaxation. The rhythmic harmony and gracefulness of the movements are timed to natural breathing, and promote strengthening in the lower body. Regular practice of Tai Chi enhances joint range-of-motion and has been shown to aid cardiovascular functioning by lowering blood pressure and heart rate, resulting in stress reduction

Feldenkrais® Awareness Through Movement
The Feldenkrais® method is a neuromuscular re-education technique which heightens an individual's awareness of movement and posture using focused breathing and gentle floor exercises. Individuals learn to release harmful holding patterns in the musculature while improving the function of the back, chest and pelvis specifically. Patients feel refreshed and calm, often learning to let go of awkward and painful movement. Feldenkrais sessions induce a state of relaxation, and are suitable for patients at every level.
